Mum coming home from a shopping trip.
She held up a blanket that had a flower pattern on it.
I can remember this being on my bed for many years.
It’s hard to pinpoint how old I was, but probably about three.

Hiding from Mum, with my brother.
I think we’d probably done something wrong.
Broken something.
I remember she sounded angry.
I was 6 years old. Maybe 7.
It’s only 10 years ago, but I remember it as if it was last week.

Me and my older cousin were standing by a fence with a few cows behind it.
He kept throwing rocks at a baby cow, and I wished he would stop.
I was about 2.

Watching my Dad shuffle cards.
It used to hypnotise me.
I think the first time I saw him, I would’ve been around 3 years old.
We holidayed in South Wales, in a caravan (he’s told me this, so it’s not part of the memory), and he and my Mum would play cards while the rain batted it down on the roof.
I can recall that sound.
But it’s his fingers around a deck of cards that I think is the earliest thing in my head.
He has arthritis now, so he can no longer shuffle them like he used to.

The shrieks of the children from next door as they played in the garden.
When I asked my Mum and Dad, they said I could have been sleeping in my room having an afternoon nap.
The family moved out before Christmas that year, so it was probably summer.
I was about two years old.

Crying.
I would have been about 3 years old.
I don’t know why I was doing it. Probably because I’d broken or lost a toy.
