Standing in the shadow of a cloud, the hillside grass folded in the stiff breeze.
Mum was with our dog, chasing after it.
It was chasing sheep.
A train in the distance sounded its horn.

When I was two years old, my mother was holding me while my dad had his hands wrapped around her neck and pushed up against the wall.
My oldest brother was kicking and punching my father and anything else he could do to get him off my mother while I was screaming and crying.
Not much of a good one, but was my first one.

Climbing into bed with my Mum when my Dad worked nights.
No real idea of age, but the eiderdown was green and purple, so late 60s or early 70s, and I would have been between 2 and 5 years of age.

When I was 3, in preschool, I got in trouble and was put into time-out.
It was my first time-out and I was scared, crying and screaming.
I imagined they were going to yell at me or spank me, but she just sat me down on the carpet in her office.
There was Barrel O’ Monkeys there, the toy where you link the monkey’s
arms together.
This was also my first time playing with Barrel O’ Monkeys.
It wasn’t so bad after all.
I was so relieved that time-out just entailed sitting alone playing with a toy.

My earliest memory or recollection was that of watching Neil Armstrong walk on the moon on TV when I was about 4; sitting next to my older sister on a white rug, the television I can still picture in my head on four long legs with knobs not buttons…sooooo long ago!

One of my earliest memories goes back to fourth grade.
We had a reading log we did every month.
The log was a grid and was marked by stickers (as all things were marked in elementary); whichever student had the most stickers by the end of the month was rewarded.
The books were point-based and the books with the highest reading level gave you the most points.
I remember walking through the library, back then it was like my sanctuary, still is sometimes.
The reading levels were color-coded with little round stickers on the spines: blue for the easiest and red for the hardest.
My hand would skim the spines of the books as I searched for the yellow and red level books.
I remember pulling the Count of Monte Cristo, a red-level book, and reading it while sitting on a small blue beanbag chair in the middle of the library.

I was two years and 7 months old.
My brother had just been born & I was hiding in the hospital room bathroom with my father because we were waiting to surprise my mom with a blue carnation.
Not much else I remember that young, but for some reason that memory really stands out.
