My Earliest Memory #301

The smell of engine oil and grease.
My Dad used to take apart his pride a joy, a Triumph motorcycle, in our
lounge room.
Mom used to go mad, of course.
I was always playing with the bolts and nuts and losing them, which meant the engine stayed in bits longer than it should have.

My Earliest Memory #300

4 years old.
Walked down the stairs and then into the front room.
Mom’s on the floor.
There’s blood around her.
The carpet’s wet with it.
Nothing else registers with me.
I kind of shut down.

My little brother was born early.
My mom had been trying to get out to the car to get to the hospital and never made it there.
Everyone’s healthy.
Carpet’s stained.
