My Earliest Memory #375

I am awakened from sleep.
I am lying in a crib, and wearing a diaper.
I am awakened because I am being beaten.
I have no recollection of any pain, just a sense of absolute bewilderment.
Then the beating stopped and the room was dark and quiet.
Then the door flew open and I saw a bright light and a head silhouetted against the door.
Then more beatings, and this time I feared I would die because I was exhaling so hard with crying I couldn’t inhale enough.
(Many years later my mother told me that some time during my childhood she told Dad that if he ever again struck one of the children she would leave him. He had been severely beaten [himself] as a child, apparently on many occasions.)
